One of the most popular event in Poland is ST. Valentine's Day, celebrated on 14tth February. It is a typical American event which we 'borrowed' in '90s. The history of Valentine's Day, and its patron saint, is shrouded in mystery. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Nowadays, St. Valentine's Day is the famous day for all lovers. People exchange cards with some poets between each other. They also give presents and celebrating that day with beloved person. We can see various decorations at the shop's windows. There are many red hearts, made from paper, and other symbols of love. In every shop we can buy other kinds of sweets in the shape of heart and hear songs about love. Television broadcasts a lot of romantic films.

Actually, I do not set store by this event. It is only commercial thing and it does not have anything in common with love! People should remember about their close friend and partners every day. In fact this event is prepared only for trade and marketing. It is supporting only by American industry so our traditional, Polish customs are displaced by that kind of events.
