James Fennimore Cooper was the author of the famous book 'The Last Of The Mohicans'. The book was popularized by the film of the same title.

He was one of twelve children in his family. As James was still a very young child, the Cooper family moved to the state New York. They lived in the almost deserted and underdeveloped area. They lived near to the big forest and James loved to play there.

After three- years study in Yale, as he was sixteen, he was taken to the United States Navy. He spent three years there and after that he came back to his hometown- Cooperstown. He was going to be a farmer.

At the age of 22, Cooper got married to Susan Lancey. His wife was very rich, so James could dedicate some time to writing. The first book written by James Cooper - "Precaution" - was not really successful. However, the second one- "The Spy" made Cooper's name well known by the Americans. The story told there was very patriotic. It was about the American Revolution. Soon after its publication, the book was translated into many languages and made Cooper very popular.

In 1826 James Cooper together with his wife, went to Europe, to Paris. They spent six years there. James kept on writing and became a recognizable writer. James was a friend of Walter Scott. In 1830 he happened to meet Mickiewicz. It is said that they used to go horse-riding.
