According to the bible, there are 7 deadly sins- gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, pride and lust. A killer in the film by David Fincher "Seven" punishes his victims for committing these sins. The movie keeps an audience anxious from the very beginning up to the end. The director uses several techniques, like shaky camera shots or dark sets, to make the viewer feel uncomfortable. The characters from the movie go through extreme emotions, which can be also experienced by the audience.
Morgan Freeman plays an older police detective- Somerset. The whole thing takes place in a gloomy city somewhere in the middle of the US. Somerset, who is supposed to retire soon, is made to work on a new case with a newcomer- Mills (Brad Pitt). They are supposed to investigate several murders. When there happens a brutal murder of the obese man, who had no enemies, detective Somerset comes to conclusion, that they deal with an unusual killer. It seems that the only guilt the man had, was huge appetite. Soon there happen murders of people, who were guilty of greed and sloth. These lead Somerset and Mill to search for the murderer.
An audience of "Seven" feels compassion towards main characters as well as towards the victims of the crimes. We get to know Mills, his wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) and older, lonely Somerset. Their sorrows and troubles affect the viewer seriously.
The film does not show much violence, nevertheless it is as disturbing as a horror movie. The viewer feels terrible tension, which is not diminished even when the case is resolved. Going out from the cinema, an audience still has an uncomfortable feeling in the stomachs.
Excellent play of the actors, great direction and brilliant photography together with the way of affecting the emotions make the film unforgettable.
