A couple years ago we learned about the tragic fatality of Princess Diana travelling with her companion Dodi Al-Fayed. For that accident everybody blamed so called paparazzi. The photographers who at all cost try to take photos of celebrities in the least expected moments. However, the couple was riding in a car drove by an intoxicated chauffeur and they exceeded the speed limit, public opinion blamed the paparazzi for everything happened that night. The fact is that they wanted to escape from these obtrusive photographers.
Since this fatal accident the public debate started. Everyone asked about the right of public figures to have the privacy. All paparazzi probably believe that politicians, celebrities, entertainers and sportsmen strongly depend on the publicity to develop their further careers, so the public has the right to know everything about them. I think that the argument is incorrect. Even if some people are well-known and well-recognized, they should have the right to lead their private lives. Moreover, every invasion of privacy, no matter if it concerns the common people or celebrities should be considered as the violation of law. The most important is to determine what can be shown in public and what should be hidden.
In my opinion, there is one possible solution. The ownership rights should be changed. Today the photos belong to the photographers who took the picture, but I think that they should belong to the subject in it. In this way, any picture couldn't be published in the press or in any other medium without the permission of the subject of that photo. The permission should be granted by the person presented in it or his/her agent. However, the photos could be allowed to take in every public event such as sporting events, open meetings, movie premieres or public meetings, where everyone except to be taken photographs. I think that the financial incentive provided for photographers for the best pictures should be limited. However, the press will be free to publish every story based on the facts. In this way many tragedies such as the fatal accident of Princess Diana would be avoided.
