New York city is dream of many people. It is the most famous city in the USA and one of the biggest cities in the world. It is the cradle of America. It is the city of symbols - democracy, power, freedom, business, wealth.
I have been to New York once, during my last summer vacation. I have to say that I have never seen anything like that before. This city is not only big and famous but it has also got a kind of magnet inside. It gathers large number of people from all over the world. Different cultures are interpenetrating as more, new emigrants from all over the world are coming to New York everyday.
The first thing that amazed me were the buildings. They are really breath taking. After living in Europe which is full of moniuments from different centuries it is shock to see that city. I could bearly see the sky when I looked up. I felt dizzy and overwhelmed by the largeness of the buildings. It really is a jungle, a concrete jungle. I had never seen anything like that. There is so much people on the streets that it is not strange that they had to build so big tenement houses and later the skyscrapers.
Of course I went to all those famous places we read and learn about. I went to the Liberty Island where I have a picture with The Statue of Liberty. I also sailed to the Ellis Island which used to be a kind of a gate to New York. All ships had to stop there and people were going through the quarantine. I went to the top of the Empire State Building. It was amazing to see the view of New York which seems to have no end. Unfortunately I couldn't admire the WTC because I was there after it was destroyed. But I belive that it was the symbol of power and wealth. The Twin Towers were almost reaching the sky. I was walking through the Broadway and I have seen Times Squere. I have also been to Metropolitan Museum of Art. I walked along the alleys of Central Park. I felt very strange as I was walking through the forest above which there were buildings growing up.
Another amazing thing is that so many people from all over the world live there. They make their own districts like: Chinatown, Little Italy, Greenpoint. They use there their national language. They have got their restaurants and their favourite food. They have got their own festivals and holidays, churches, discos. It looks like small towns in one big city. The most dangerous was black district - Harlem.
I was overwhelmed by New York. I wish I could come back there some time. It is something strange about that city. Maybe it is the people, maybe power and wealth. I don't know, but I know I miss New York although I spent there only one week.
