Nowadays, the knowledge of foreign languages is as indispensable as being able to read or write. Undoubtedly, English has become an international language, a universal means of communication on both social and business grounds. Today knowledge of English is required of candidates applying for posts in all important comapnies.

Learning foreign languages has become a fashion; even children in kindergartens have English, French or German lessons. Some parents thinks that the earlier their child starts learning foreign languages the more successful he or she will be. Others claim that children should first master their native tongue and then start learning a foreign one.

People learn foreign languages in a variety of ways; they attend language courses, take private lessons or go abroad to learn from native speakers or spend summer in laguage camps. There are also special courses oriented at teaching professional vocabulary like, for example, courses for soldiers, nurses and doctors or businessmen. Some people prefer to learn on their own using special computer programs or subscribing to correspondence courses which provide all the necessary teaching materials.

I learn two fereign languages-Italian and English. In my opinion, it is easier to learn English because it is so popular that nowadays we are exposed to it everywhere; we can listen to it on the radio, on TV or even in the streets. However, English pronunciation often poses many problems. When it comes to Italian, pronunciation is rather easy but grammar can be hard. Italian is a melodious and romantic language which sounds very pleasant, especially in songs.

Today, when the world is becoming a global village, knowing foreign languages is essential to facilitate communication on many different levels. Knowing English is considered by the employers as obvious as knowing your native language therefore those who speak also other foreign languages, especially those less popular, have more opportunities to get a lucrative post.
