My favourite movie is called "the seventh seal" ("Siódma pieczęć"). The director of this film is Ingmar Bergman. The movie is old as it was created in 1957. But it does not make it worse. It is a movie about things that are always important: about live and death.
The seventh seal from the title is the symbol of Apocalypse and it is taken from the Bible. The movie talks also about religion. The action of the film takes place in medieval times and the main character is a knight who returns home from a crusade.
The movie starts with a scene on a pebbly beach in some Scandinavian country. The knight plays chess with an unusual person; the death itself. The death looks like a very pale man with easily visible cheekbones. The death cam to take the knight but he talks her into making a deal. They would play chess and the fate of the knight would depend on whom the winner would be. If the knight will win, he will live forever. However, if he loses the death will take him immediately. There is no time limit; the game will end only when one of the players wins.
We see many different kinds of people during the film. There are actors who travel around the country and make shows for money, there are people who walk, prey and hit themselves with whips. They do it in order to repel the plague that hit the land. The death constantly reminds the people that nobody can cheat it. There is no escape. However, it continues to play with the knight. It seems to be possible for the knight to win. So, does the death speaks truth or is it possible to live forever?
The death manifest itself throughout the whole movie. Even if it does not appear personally, there are people dying and there is the plague. No one knows when he or she will be taken. People from all social classes die, even babies.
During the movie we hope that the knight will eventually succeed in his struggle against the death. But at the end it turns out that really nobody can cheat on death. It is only possible to escape her for some time. But eventually comes and takes you. Because of that the movie is rather pessimistic.
