Emily Dickinson

"My life closed twice before its close"

My life closed twice before its close

It yet remains to see

If immortality unveil

A third event to me

So huge, so hopeless to conceive

As these that twice befell

Parting is all we know of heaven

And all we need of hell

I would like to propose my interpretation of poem by Emily Dickinson entitled "My Life Closed Twice Before Its Close". In this poem the author shows the topic which is very important to all living creatures - death. It is my favourite poem because it shows how fragile is people's life and how people react when they lose someone close to their heart.

In my opinion this poem is based on the autobiographical motifs. Emily Dickinson has probably lost people whom she loved with all her heart. She decided to compose this poem as she was overflowed with sorrow and sadness after death of those two people. She couldn't forget about them because you can't forget about someone who was part of your life. Her heart almost burst with grief. She has lost the meaning of life. The author brings back only bad memories from her life. She is standing at the end of her way and she has discerned how unimportant and fruitless her all life was. The hapiness and joy have died with those two people. She sais:" Parting is all we know of heaven and all we need of hell". She is afraid that nobody will ever remember her with affection. She is terrified by the thought that after her death there will be nothing left behind her.

This point of view is very pessimistic and gloomy. It is hard to find happiness when the only thing you can see is darkness. On the other hand when we obsreve our lifes we can find a lot of black holes. How can you belive in good when there are so many starving people all over the world and so much food is waisted. And what about wars. Why can't we live in peace? Why the innocent blood must be sheded? In this situation it is easy to agree with the author who claims that people go through the hell on earth. However, there are a lot of bad things about people's lifes it would be very hard to survive without a bit of optimism. In my opinion positive emotions like love, forgivness, friendship are motivating people to be better. The life is not easy but we must try to live it through as best we could.

I have introduced one point of this poem but there is also another one which I would like to talk about. In my opinion the author by saying that her "life is closed twice" ment not physical but emotional death. All living creatures need love in their life. We love our partners and the most of all we love our children who are parts of ourselves. If you love somebody that mean that you give him all your heart and that you become one. When somebody you loved dies the part of you die, too. In my opinion this is exactly what happened to the author. Two most important people in her life have vanished. She has lost everything what was precious to her. All the happiness was taken from her and the only thing left was death. Her life has been "closed twice before its close".

Finally, I think that when there is love in your life there is also hope for the better future and there is happiness. But when you lose your love than all the hope is gone and you focus attention on the bad sides of your life.

This is one of my favourite poems about human's emotions. It shows us that life is not easy. That life is not just black and white. How are we supposed to live so not to close our lifes? The answer can be found only in one's heart.
