I would like to present the problem of euthanasia and all controversies this problem involves. At first I want to explain that euthanasia means the gentle death, which is the salvation for terminally-ill patients. Sometimes it is called an act of mercy.

Today euthanasia is a very controversial problem and there are a lot of supporters and opponents of this idea. A lot of modern moralists, lawyers, philosophers, priests and doctors take up the problem of euthanasia. Some of them think that life is the highest value and needs special protection. They also think that taking away someone's life is wrong and it should be banned by the law, even if the patients knowingly agree to do it.

For many years as the definition of death was considered the moment of the termination of breathing. Then the death was defined as the total stoppage of blood circulation. Today as the definition of death is considered the total brain inactivity. But the modern medicine can sustain patient's respiration and the heartbeat, even if the brain seems to be inactive.

Medical development is so huge nowadays that today many diseases which were considered as incurable can be cured. So people who make a decision about performing the euthanasia take a big responsibility, because it may happen that in the near future a medicine for this disease will be invented.

Euthanasia is widely discussed everywhere. Legalizing euthanasia means the formal license to kill some terminally-ill patients. Forbidding it, on the other hand, will be for some patients the continuum of suffering.
