The subject of euthanasia became very popular. It is widely discussed in media as well as among all people. Euthanasia is not killing people, but not prolonging their lives if they are terminantly ill and suffer too much. In such situation, a doctor may give the patient a dose of some medicine, that will make the patient die quickly and painlessly. In countries, where the goverments are liberal (like in Holland), it recently became legal. Some doctors claim, that it their duty is not to prolong someone's live as long as it is possible, but not to let someone suffer too hard. In my opinion, if it is really impossible to save one's life, then it can be good to stop the torments. However, there are also people, who claim that all old people ought to undergo euthanasia. With such opinion I canno agree. I will try to explain my view on this matter.
It is true that most Western societies are getting older. There are less people bored than there was earlier. The young need to work to support the old. The group of old people has to be paid pensions. The money they get is often not enough for them. The situation is difficult for young people as well as for old. But is euthanasia a solution of this problem? I think that people cannot be killed only because they grow old and cannot work anymore. They are still human beings and have a right to live. They have a right to decide on their lives. The younger cannot make a decision, whether the older should live or not.
People often wonder, what is the meaning of life and why do we live. Already the ancient philosophers tried to answer these questions. One of them said that the only thing that we can be sure of is our existence. Life is said to be the most important value. We believe that it is a gift from God. This is why life have to be respected. In our religion, the worst sin is to take away someone else's or our own life. When we grow old, we still have the same rights. We can enjoy life. If we think that we can condemn someone to death, we make a big mistake. We cannot treat other as things, which can be thrown away. It is not moral. In my opinion, in contemporary world there are no principles and moral rules. Most people think that money and youth are the most important things in life. We no longer care for others. I wonder, if those, who support euthanasia of old people would like to do it to their parents? I think that it is impossible. I hope that killing old people will never happen. We can talk think about euthanasia, but in reference to terminally ill patients and not to old people in general.
