In Poland, when you eat together with other people, you have to say 'smacznego' before the meal. The way of using forks and knifes by Polish people is the same as in all Europe- one has to hold a fork in the left hand and a knife in the right one. In general, one cannot eat with fingers, except when he eats chicken together with well known people.
After the meal, you are to put the cutlery in the middle of your plate. You should say 'dziękuję'. It means 'thank you' and you can say it to someone, who prepared the meal as well as to those, with whom you ate.
English people usually don't day anything at the beginning of the meal. They eat a little bit differently than we. They have lunch about the noon and dinner early in the evening. But they hold knife and fork in the same way we do. In England one should never smoke during the meal. It is considered very rude.
