Dear Sam,
I hope that you had a good journey back home. I am writing you to comment on the situation we saw at the airport. Do you remember the pickpocket caught by the police? I cannot forget it. I started wondering, why do some people commit different kind of crimes. That guy looked very poor. Perhaps he has no job and no place to live. Many people in similar situation start to steal from others, because one cannot live without any money…
In our country another problem is that the police is not strong enough. They rarely have money and people to solve difficult cases. Sometimes they simply do not care for small thefts and burglars. I think that the government should work on establishing better laws and the police has to train its members better.
Moreover, there is a problem of drugs and dealers. Those, who are addicted to some kind of drugs, often have no money as well. Many of such people sell the property of their parent or relatives, the others steal to get some money for drugs. It also happens, that they are so desperate to get the money that they may be dangerous to other people- they may beat them or even kill.
I think that if someone starts to cross the law, he or she must be very desperate. Many people, who commit crimes, have had very sad childhood. They got no good example from their parents. Many of them may think that for example stealing is a normal way of life.
I would like to hear your opinion on that subject. What does the situation look like in Ireland?
I am looking forward to your letter.
Yours MB
