William Blake

"The Sick Rose"

"O Rose, thou art sick!

The invisible worm

That flies in the night,

In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed

Of crimson joy:

And his dark secret love

Does the life destroy."

Thoughts on the poem "A Dream" written by Edgar Allan Poe

The poem presents how big and sad influences may the memories have on our lives. Our memories are always in our minds and it is impossible that they will leave us alone. Memories may be bad or wonderful.

In his poem "A Dream" Edgar Allan Poe presents the worst side of his memories. They aren't good memories, which remain about the happy past. Unfortunately, we can't spend the whole life dreaming in the imaginary world and dreaming about the past all the time. Sometimes we should "wake up" and we have to come back to the reality and normal life. When we come back to the sad reality and we try to compare the situation we are in with all theses imaginary things we dreamed about, our reflections will be sad and full of sorrow. Dreams make it possible to present us that we could have happier and better lives and then we realize that in fact that we are still in the boring and sorrowful world.

To show the differences between real boring life and the dreams Poe used some oppositions such as "dark - light" and "joy - broken-hearted". Everything we have experienced seems to be dark as night and full of sad and scary things, without any hope. Whereas the memories seems to be light, friendly and easy.

When we are sad and bored in the real world, the only way to not to suffer is to turn back to the past times. Thinking about everything what happened some time ago is easier than dealing with daily problems. Also "turned back upon the past" sometimes may be helpful to understand better the situation, the place we live in or people we meet everyday. Every one of us needs sometimes some hours to have the reflection on his or her own life.

Edgar Allan Poe called dreams "a lonely spirit guiding". He thought that they take care about us, they help us to become strong enough to deal with problems in our lives, they show us the how to live. Dreams can't be the enemies of ourselves, because we create them. There is the piece of advice: when something doesn't go well and we try to change the situation, we should image completely new situation. The imagination and dreams may be very powerful, however we should be aware that "visions" not very often see the negative aspects of our future. Sometimes we remember only the best thing happened in the past, whereas we tried to forted about the worse ones. I think this is a good idea, because we should remember just the bright and good things, forgetting about these unhappy ones.

In my opinion, that poem "A Dream" is very mystical one. It shows us the zone full of magic. And explain that we can't explain our dreams, because they have a lot of meanings, which depend on the time and situation we are in. Edgar Allan Poe teaches us how to recognize our dreams as the best friends. They exist to bring us help, give us some time to rest, but also they remind us that our contemporary position may be "dark" if we compare it with "bright" imaginations.

Our dreams seem to be a form of the mirror of our real life. Our image may be changed, but a lot of features will remain the same. What we should is the fact that our dreams can't exist without the real life. To have some memories, we are supposed to have the past. This shows us that dreams aren't so powerful. There is always the "truth's day-star" which help us to set ourselves in the reality. Whether we want or not the real day will always exist. What is more, we can't lie about things that everyone is able see and that fact creates that part of our lives "purely bright".

I like "A Dream" very much. It arises a lot of problems about which we should think about. I have always been a daydreamer, but I have never looked at my dreams in this way. All memories are very important. However there are a lot of bad memories. When I try to recall some things, that happened some time ago, I try to forget about these bad and unhappy moments and instead of them recall only the most colourful and joyful ones. Dreams and memories may be so interesting and so wonderful! When we stop dreaming we will feel that life is too grey and full of sorrow.
