It has been proven through the centures that people are very creative. Always when the problem occurred people were looking for suitable solutions. Thanks to that we live in todays world of technic, computers, cell phones, modern medicine, etc. This confirms the old rule and proverb - necessity is mother of inventions. One of the bigest necessity for human being was… toilet.

It was discovered that the oldest toilet dates back to the 2800 years BC. It was found on the Orkeny Islands in the North of Scotland. Of course the shape of it differs from todays toilets but there are no doubts that what was found was the toilet. It was a simple invention which used the law of gravity. It was some kind of chair with a hole in the middle which carried the sewage down usually to the river through the pipes. But not much later because in 2000 BC. The real toilet with flushing system was found in Crete.

It was a wish of Queen Elizabeth I to have a toilet in her castle, so it was built there by sir John Harington in the end of XVI century. It was a water closer with water flush. But it was not enough for people, they wanted to make it better. In 1775 Alexander Cummings, the english watchmaker, constructed the water closet with the small water trap what helped to get rid the stench. And finally, in the beginning of XIX century the toilet similar to todays was build by the Thomas Crapper, the english plumber.

Well, we could all exist without cell phones, computers and TV but we couldn't live without toilet…
