Evansville Facts

History

At first Evansville was consisted of 200 acre area, which was bought from the government in 1812 by Hugh McGary, Jr. McGary and General Robert M. Evans. General Evans became the attorney and the territorial legislator of Evansville and helped in including Evansville to the town list. Evansville was incorporated on January 27, 1847 and since then it has fulfilled the role as economic and social centre for three states.

The population of the whole area of Evansville is 300,000.

Time

Unlike the most of Indiana cities, Evansville belongs to the Central Time Zone. In Evansville Central Standard Time is used from the last Sunday in October till the first Sunday in April. The Central Daylight Time is used for the rest of the year. It means that in Evansville an hour backs each fall and an hour is added each spring.

Climate

The climate of Evansville is moderate and there are four distinct seasons. The average temperature is ranged between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The annual rainfall is estimated at 42 inches and the annual snowfall is estimated at 13 inches.

Currency Exchange Service

Fifth Third Bank and Integra Bank exchange the currency and they are the main banking centres. There is also Old National Bank, which also offers the banking services, but it is much smaller.

Traffic Regulations

Right turn is permitted and the red traffic light means complete stop unless a green light prohibiting this is seen. Left turns on the red traffic light are possible if the turn is done from a one-way street to the other one-way one. There are speed limits estimates at 30 mph on streets in the city and 55 mph on the highways.

Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic beverages can be bought from Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. Buyers must be over 21 years old. On Sunday some bars and restaurants may sell alcohol. On Sunday they can be bought form 12:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

In Evansville there are The University of Southern Indiana, The University of Evansville, The Community College of Indiana/Ivy Tech State College and The ITT Technical Institute. There are also some high schools: Evansville -Vanderburgh School Corporation and Evansville Catholic Schools.
