Kołobrzeg

Kołobrzeg is a city located in the north of Poland. Its history goes back as long ago as the eight century. It was then that the settlement of Budziszyno was established. Budziszyno was situated in the area of today's Kołobrzeg. The first Polish Dicese was established there in the year 1000, by king Bolesław Chrobry. Nearly three hundred years later, in the year 1255, a new town was built on the right bank of the Parsęta River. In the fourteenth century, Kołobrzeg became a member of Hansa.

Fishing, trade and agriculture had huge impact on the development of the city, which was aslo turned into a fortress several times and ruined. There are still remnants of the medieval fortifications called Powder Turret.

Nowadays, Kołobrzeg is a popular tourist and health resort, where many people spend their holidays and recuperate their health thanks to beneficial influence of iodine. Kołobrzeg's economy depends mostly on tourism and fishery.

There are many toursit attractions in Kołobrzeg, most of them of historical importance like, for example, St. John the Baptist's Church in Budzistowo constructed in the thirteenth century. The Lighthouse is also an interesting place to visit. Another historic building is neogothic Town Hall where the municipal council has its seat today. There are also many modern tourist attractions, among them Modern Art Gallery or Cultural Center. There is also a famous monument commemorating the ceremony celebrating Poland's regained access to the Baltic Sea.

Kołobrzeg is among the most popular tourist resorts at the Polish seaside. It attracts toursits not only from Poland but also from abroad. In summer, the streets of the city are crowded with multitudes of tourists who enjoy their time swimming in the city, sunbathing or just strolling along the beach.
