Wolin Island is the only one Polish island and it is located near the German-Polish border. It covers 265 km2 and it borders on the Baltic Sea and the Bay of Szczecin. Mainly, it is a lowland island and there are a lot of forests and some lakes. Inhabitants of Wolin Island take up fishing and raising domestic animals. These two branches are the mayor industries of the island. Tourism is also an important part of island's economy. There are numerous bathing resorts on this island, which are very popular and crowded during summer. The principal town - Wolin is famous for its fishing port. There is also the fortress and some buildings remains from the Slavic settlement, which are dated back from the 9th century. They make up the oldest part of the town. In the past this island didn't belong to Poland. At first, the island was a part of Sweden, it passed to Prussia in 1721, and then to Poland after World War II. Most part of the island is covered by National Park, which was set up on March 3,1960. The forests of the Wolinski National Park are a great place for walking lovers. Most of the forests in the Park are mixed or deciduous ones. Moreover, the Park is a habitat of many endangered species. Wolin Island is a place worth to visit for its amazing climate and atmosphere.
