It was Czechoslovakian village and the story happened in 1957. The night was dark and all fields surrounding the village were covered with the white snow. It was a quiet village, but some people weren't sleeping. Eyes of them were observing the road and all the fields around the village. Near this village, only a few kilometres away, there was the Austrian border. The Czechoslovakian were not allowed to cross this border. Abroad the living conditions were much better and everyone wanted to escape from this poor country. The border guards watched it all night and day long.
In a small house in the village some couple was talking. She held a baby in her arms. The woman looked excited, but actually she was very afraid.
"Tell me again", she asked. "Did he mage to get to Austria last night?"
"Yes, he did", the man answered. "He wasn't seen and heard by anybody. The last night there were great opportunists to do it, because the sky was much darker than today. Tonight it is much more difficult - the moon is shining!"
"But today it is Christmas Eve", she said, "the guards are sitting in their guardhouse and celebrating, aren't they?"
"That's true", answered the man, "but sometimes the guards come out and drive along the road to patrol it. So you have to be careful and fast. If someone sees you, you have to run very fast". Then he checked the time. "So, it's high time to go".
So she put on a white long coat and then white hat on her head. The baby was also wearing the white coat.
"Good", the man whispered. "White is the best colour to wear when there is snow. Anybody can't see you. Do you understand? So let's go!"
They left the house quickly and walked down the village. They walked a few meters and they stopped. The man told her very quietly:
"Ok. There are some high trees. Do you see? Go there and turn left there and go along fifty meters. When you find yourself on to the road, run across it very quickly. When you will be near the river, turn right and run about 500 meters. Walk across two other fields and then you will be in Austria. Your friends will be waiting for you. So stay and in the second field and wait patiently. Go now! Good luck".
So the woman started to run as fast as she could. At first, the baby was sleeping, but suddenly it woke up and started to cry. She was frightened and she didn't know what to do. So she stopped to calm the child down, but it was crying louder and louder. She started run again and reached the road. Baby's crying was the one noise it could be heard. She was so frightened that she didn't notice a black vehicle driving ahead her. The border guards in the car noticed her. Suddenly they shot at her. For a moment there was nothing heard only the silence.
The woman's body laid on the road covered with snow. And then the only sound could be heard was the baby's crying.
