In New York there are more and more homeless people each year. It was estimated that in 2004 there were more than 100,000 people living on the streets and in the tunnels. Not many people know, that there is a special group of people, called 'the mole people'. They live deep under the ground in the tunnels, which were previously used by railway. They started to live there more than 20 years ago, when the trains stopped going there. Today they make the group of over 5,000 people.
The life, which these people live seems to be very difficult. They are honorable people, proud of themselves. They never beg for help. They earn their living by collecting tins and metal and selling it. Some of them look for old books in the garbage and sell them afterwards. Large part of such people work as cleaners in different companies.
However, there appears to be a problem. The major of New York has plans to modernize the means of public transportation and they are going to use the tunnels again. It seems that those people, who made their homes there, will be really homeless once again.
