According to the dictionary, discrimination means 'treating a person or group differently (usually worse) than others' (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 1995). Most of us consider it a very bad phenomenon. There are many different kinds of discrimination. One can be discriminated because of sex, race, age, religion, place of origin. In my opinion nowadays you may be discriminated even for such features as height, color of eyes of hair or weight. If you look a bit different from the others, you may be treated in a very bad way. Many people base their opinion on others only on their looks and have no interests in what the person is really like.
For me, discriminating others is awful. Those, who are discriminatory towards others, are usually very cruel and they are convinced that they are the best. They don't want to accept others because of the color of the eyes or skin or different believes. The basic word for discrimination is- 'different'. And the basic trait of the person discriminating someone else is stupidity. Such person is not able to get to know others or try to understand them and talk to them.
In my mind, most people are really afraid of things and people, whom they don't know. Those, who are open towards others, no matter how they look like or what they believe in, don't discriminate them. But if we stay apart from others, they may seem to threaten us. We become impolite for them and we judge them unfairly. But when we humiliate somebody else, we should always feel ashamed and unhappy. We must realize, how bad it is to be so cruel for others.
The groups of people, who are discriminated have quite difficult lives. Some ethnic groups or the homosexual people are badly treated at work. They cannot behave naturally when they are in public places. They are constantly afraid of people, they are sad and they feel comfortable only in their own houses. Their lives are not truly normal.
In my opinion, we should do anything to stop people from discriminating others. If all people knew, what it means to be discriminated, they would never discriminate any other person.
