People in America are especially keen on celebrating different public holidays. The most popular American holidays are- Martin Luther's Day, Valentine's Day, Memorial Day, St. Patrick's Day, Independence Day, Columbus Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving. As there are so many holidays in America, I will only describe five of them, which are considered most important.
The Valentine's day is celebrated on 14th February. This is the day, when everyone expresses their love to others. It is popular to send special cards to friends and beloved people. The couples spend this evening together, they go to restaurants and talk about love.
Easter is the time, when Christians memorize the resurrection of Jesus. Nevertheless, even those, who are not really religious, celebrate this holiday. Many people go to churches and pray. They also meet their friends and families. Parents give colorful eggs to their children. They also play popular game- 'egg hunting'.
The Memorial Day is celebrated in May, on the last Monday of the month. On this day, American people show their respect to their ancestors, who fought and died in all American wars. People don't go to work on this day. They gather on the streets and organize parades.
On the 4th July, there is the important holiday- the Independence Day. On this day, people commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which happened in 1776. It was the main cause of the American Revolution. On this day, Americans meet friends and organize barbecues, play and watch baseball matches. There are fireworks all over the country.
On the fourth thursday of November, there is the most famous American holiday - Thanksgiving. The tradition of this holiday is rooted in history. When Pilgrims from Europe came to America at the beginning of 17th century, they started to thank God for the new land to live. On this day, all families meet together, they eat a special meal and pray. The best known dishes eaten by Americans on Thanksgiving are- pumpkin pie and roast turkey.
Americans, as many people all around the world, celebrate Christmas on 25th December. It is the day, when people memorize the birth of Christ. Nowadays it has not much to do with religion. It has become an opportunity to enjoy meeting friends and families, eat much and give presents to others.
