Music is connected with our lives. There are many places where we can hear music: our homes, schools, places of work, streets. But why it is that? Why people like listening to music? Do they get something from listening to it?
There are many genres of music. For example there is rock, metal, hip-hop, rap, techno, and classical music. Different people listen to different kinds of music. The kind of music they listen to says much about their characters. Teenagers who are against the whole world like music that is aggressive and has explicit lyrics. This music expresses their beliefs. Their parents do not like this kind of music and they listen to, for example, classical music of music from the times when they were young. Music may be good for our health; it may make us calm and relaxed. However, it may also make us nervous. Sometimes it leads to conflicts between the adults and the young. Parents do not like the music that is listened by their children because it is too loud. Their children like loud music, especially they like to listen to it in cars. But music can also bring people together. The people who like particular kind of music may gather in fanclubs and talk about their music and listen to it. In the Internet there are many web pages and forums on which fans can talk.
I listen to many bands but my favourites are Kult, Tool, Led Zeppelin, Creed, Savatage and Dream theatre. I like rock and metal best. But I also listen to other kinds of music. When I have to concentrate on something I like listening to classical music. I like listening to operas because they combine classical music and theatre. When I want to dance and move a lot, I listen to techno or dance. I like collecting new CDs but it is difficult because they are very expensive. However, it is very interesting hobby and I know many people who do it. Generally music says much about the person. We can learn about the character and personality of the person if we know what music does he or she listen to. Good places to listen to new music are concerts and I like going to them. Unfortunately I live in a small town and there are not many concerts and the bands that come are not the best ones. I often go to discos where I can dance, move a lot and relieve stress. Our school often organises discos and I always go there. There are not many things to do in our town in the evening so discos are very popular.
Many people would like to be like their idols. They want to have similar clothes and look like them. They buy clothes that were worn by the star and decorate their bags with symbols of their favourite bands. They also tend to have similar points of view on many aspects of life. They admire the musicians, for example Madonna is a very famous singer and men admire her. They believe that she is beautiful and can sing very nice. Young girls admire Curt Cobain and Jim Morrison. They listen to their songs and read the lyrics. They cry when there is an anniversary of their dead. Many people are fascinated with life of the famous musicians. They buy newspapers that tell stories about private lives of the stars. They like to know every new gossip about their idols.
We often listen to music when we travel. In cars we have radios or CD players. When we walk we listen to the music from a Walkman. In buses there is always a radio playing. It is very atmospheric to sit around a campfire and listen to somebody who can play a guitar. I admire people who can play on an instrument and I would like to also be able to play. I plan to start learning in the future.
I think that we need music to live. It is very important for us, because it can help us in many cases. It may make us calm when we are nervous. When we are sad it can make us happier. I believe that we could not function properly without any music.
