Music seems to be very strongly connected with our lives. The amount of music we can here everywhere suggests that it is something very important for humans. What are the reasons for it? What do people get when they listen to music?
We say that we listen to music but usually we mean one particular kind of music. There are many genres of music and each of them attracts different personalities. They choose music that is similar to their belief and express their personality. The people who are young, angry and against everybody and everything often choose as their favourite music rap or grunge. They are attracted by explicit lyrics and fast, aggressive music. In the opposite corner to them are older people. They enjoy classical music or music from the times when they were young, for example songs by Anna German. This tremendous difference between the music of the young and the adult sometimes leads to conflicts. Teenagers do not understand the music of their parents, for them it is boring. On the other hand the adults think that the music of their children is not music at all. It is a "noise". Parents usually do not like techno music that is played by young drivers, who cannot imagine driving a car without a loud music in the background. However, the music does not only separate people. It often brings them together. People who listen to the same kind of music gather in fanclubs, talk about it and listen to it together. In the Internet they can communicate on forums devoted to particular kinds of music.
I like listening to rock music and my favourite bands are: Kult, Radiohead and Tool. I listen to other kinds of music but this is the on that I like most. The kind of music I choose depends of my mood. I listen to classical music when I have to concentrate on something. I also like operas because they are a great combination of a theatre and philharmonic. I listen to techno and disco when I want to move not only sit and listen. Dancing to this music allow me to fight the stress and to extinguish the energy which gathers in me. That is why I often go to discos. Fortunately there are discos organised once a month in our school. I enjoy them very much, as other people do. Moreover, it is one of the few ways to amuse yourself in my town. I buy original CDs but not as often as I would like to. They are simply too expensive. The kind of music we listen to often show what type of person we are and reveal our character. The best way to get into the music is to go on a concert of the group. Unfortunately I live in a small town and there are not many concerts there. Sometimes I go to Cracow in order to see one but I do not do it often as it is expensive.
Musicians are usually very famous and lots of people try to be like they. Musicians, for example, set trends in fashion. Many young people like dressing like their idols. For example the glasses that John Lennon had, became very popular accessory. People also carry symbols of their favourite bands, for example on their bags. Men admire female vocalists, for example Madonna. She is believed to be the symbol of sex. Female teenagers were admiring Curt Cobain. They were crying when he died. Many people are interested in the private life of their idols. They read newspapers and listen to gossips. Musicians are becoming very important persons in their lives. They even influence their way of thinking.
Music is often a companion of our travels. When we drive a car of walk we often listen to music. In buses there is always a radio playing. Some people can play an instrument and I admire them. I would like to play a guitar. It is a very useful skill, especially on campfires when we sit around the fire, play and sing various songs.
I strongly believe that we need music in our lives. It is an entertainment but it also can help us. It may make us calmer and helps fighting stress. When we are sad we can listen to our favourite song and it may make us happier.
