The historic Tower of London is located by the north bank of the Thames River, the Tower Bridge nearby. Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror who was invader of Britain of 1066. He decided to build the Tower to make the impression on the English and to frighten them. The story of the Tower seems to be long and cruel.

At first the Tower was a big prison for every enemy of the king. It is said that the ghosts of prisoners who died inside the Tower still are haunting. The Tower is consisted of many buildings, but the well-known is the White Tower. It is also the oldest one. The walls of the White Tower are about thirty meters high. Today there is the Jewel House, where the famous Crown Jewels are kept.

There is also the guard, which secure the Tower and the Crown Jewels. It is called the Warders or Beefeaters. They know the history very well and are wearing the famous uniforms of royal guards, which were designed in 1500.

Not only have the Beefeaters guarded the Tower. The soldiers from the regiment of foot soldiers are also responsible for guarding the Tower. They also secure the Buckingham Palace. Moreover, they are famous for having their own ceremony on the Tower Green.

On occasion the regiment fire the guns. In this way they celebrate the royal birthday. Today the Tower belongs to the best known places in London. It doesn't frighten Londoners any more. However the gun fires sometimes may frighten the tourists.
