Adam Mickiewicz is concidered as the biggest poet in Poland. He is the patron of all writers and poets. He gained the national and worldwide fame. He was famous patriot in XIX century when there was no Polish country on the map. He had emigrated to France after the November Uprising. He was a profesor on the Univeristy in Paris where he was teaching about Poland, Lithuania Ukraine. He became a symbol of longing to independent country.
One of his biggest masterpiece is "Pan Tadeusz". It is a twelve - volume book written in rhyme. It tells the story of polish nobility, about longing to the land of his childhood. It is beautiful because of romantic descriptions of nature and because of great description of characters.
Lately it was adapted by Andrzej Wajda. The job was not very easy because of the structure of the books. It was also very hard to find good actors who would play the main roles. After all I think the director managed to make another masterpiece.
First of all, the main actors were choosen very carefully by the director. I think that this was the half of the success as this are the big names of polish scene: Gerwazy - Daniel Olbrychski, Soplica - Andrzej Seweryn, Telimena - Grażyna Szapołowska, Earl - Marek Kondrat. On the other hand he let the young actors to play two, the most important and key roles: Tadeusz - Michał Żebrowski and Zosia - Alicja Bachleda - Curuś. Nevertheless there were some doubts about the Bogusław Linda who was cast in the part of Robak, the priest. It was a little bit contoversial as the mentioned actor played in action films and was rather an actor similar to Bruce Willis. He was always playing parts of killers or policeman and in "Pan Tadeusz" he was supposed to be a priest and patriot. After all, I think he did his best and played just perfect.
Moreover, the film was shoot in beautiful landscapes with typical polish nature. The landowning where the whole action took place was very convincing. Even the smallest details were seen to. While watching the movie you will be moved to the XIX th century Poland. You will quarell, talk, laugh and relax with the XIX th century nobilities and you will be the same, big patriot.
The patriotism is very important part of this masterpiece. You cannot understand this film or book if you don't know polish history. The tragedy of people in that time was that they were deprived of their country. They were hoping to restore it when the star of Napoleon Bonaparte lit up. He was telling polish people about freedom and he gave them a great hope for independence by establishing the Warsaw Duchy. Unfortunately, it only casued more death. The history of XIX th century is one of the most tragic for Poland.
In my opinion this film the same as book should be seen by all polish people. This is a lesson of patriotism and history. This is our national heritage. We should remember about our country wherever we go and whatever we do. This is a beautiful story about our ancestors their life and their love. This film is not to be missed by anyone.
