The world today has changed a lot. First of all, parents work a lot and they usually have just one or two children. Very often they haven't got much time for children and family and by being permissive they try to compensate their lack of time.
In my opinion it is not strange that parents are more permissive than they were centures ago. In the past, where there were for example six, nine or even more children in one family, parents couldn't be permisive because they didn't have enough money. Older children were taking care of younger when parents were working. That made children more mature and responsible. They couldn't get everything they wanted. On the other hand there were less goods in the shops so the needs were also smaller.
Nowadays, parents work very hard and they are leaving their children with baby - sitter or even alone. Later, instead of spending time together they are trying to compensate their absence by buying presents. That is the reason why children become more and more spoilt. They are left alone so they can do whatever they want. Moreover, the children from rich families are more often addicted to drugs or they had commited a crime than poorer children. The children from less rich families cannot afford everything and they learn how to spend money in a clever way.
Of course it all depends on families. My parents are permissive but only in some cases. They have taught me the respect for other people and how hard you have to work to earn money. I wish I could raise my children in the same way as my parents.
