English is used as a first language by over 450 millions people around the world. Most of them are Americans. About 500 millions people use English as their second language. As far as it is considered as the foreign language, the amount of users is greater. The number of English speaking inhabitants of Western Europe isn't exactly estimated. It is proved that almost every well-educated man in the Scandinavia or in Western Europe can speak English fluently. English enables the communication among nations. It makes possible the trade relations all over the world. A lot of foreign transactions are done in English. That's why in so many companies the English knowledge is required from all employees. Almost every graduate of Polish university is supposed to speak English well. Moreover, in the international scientific communication English is also used. English is known as a language of mass-media. When you use the Internet, the basic knowledge of English is very helpful. You won't be able to use the Internet efficiently, if you don't understand the basic massages. The better are your English skills, the more media you are able to understand. It can be useful when you want to take advantages of English speaking television, radio or newspapers. What is more, travelling all over the world without at least basic English skills seems to be impossible. At the airports and in hotels all over the world all announcements are presented in English.
What are the reasons for the popularity of English? Why has it become the international language? In spite of the fact that Chinese language is used by greater amount of native speakers, it hasn't become an international one, because it is too difficult. What is more, its popularity encompasses the certain part of the world - Asia. English is much easier to learn and understand. Spanish is also very popular, but not as popular as English is. Millions of people speak Spanish, but any Spanish-speaking country is able to create the global power. Some attempts were made to create the artificial language, in which people could communicate, but the idea failed. One of the artificial language was called Esperanto, which was created by Polish scientists.
For all these reasons we should learn English, because probably it will be still the most popular international language.
