"Emma" is the book of Jane Austen, which tells about the twenty-one years girl. Emma Woodhouse - the title heroine - was beautiful, smart and rich. Emma lived in Highbury near London. She has been trying to find a husband for Harriet Smith, who was her friend. It wasn't easy, because every candidate was charmed by Emma and didn't pay attention to Harriet.

Emma tried to introduce Harriet to the higher class of society. When Mr. Martin had asked Harriet to get married him she refused. He wouldn't be a good husband, because he was just a farmer. Then Emma tried to convince Harriet that Mr. Elton would be the best partner for her. The other opinion had Mr. Knightley, who was friend of Emma. When he discovered that Harriet didn't want to marry to Mr. Martin, he became angry. Mr. Knightley prophesied that Harriet wouldn't find, because most of them such as Mr. Elton looked only for money and a good material status of wife's family.

Emma thought that this wasn't true, because she believed that Mr. Elton fell in love with Harriet. Then she found a letter contained a short poem addressed to the Miss…. Thanks to it Emma was sure that it was addressed to Harriet.

Everything changed on Christmas Eve, when the whole family was invited for dinner. The previous day Harriet got a cold and she couldn't go there. Emma tried to explain the situation to Mr. Elton. He claimed he was sorry, but he didn't seem to be unhappy. During the dinner Emma was completely surprised when Mr. Elton spent with her a lot of time. Emma learnt the truth, when the family was going back home. Emma and Mr. Elton found themselves alone, when Mr. Elton quickly sat next to her. He said that he fell in loved with her and he would probably die if she didn't want to get married to him. She was so shocked and she couldn't say any word, but she wanted he leave her alone.

Emma didn't know what to do, so she was happy to see so much snow outside the next day. It meant that she didn't have to go to church and she avoided Mr. Elton. What is more, she couldn't visit Harriet and she needn't have to tell her about the whole situation. When the snow melted, Emma got a letter from Mr. Elton. He wrote that he left Highbury and wanted to go to Bath to see his friends. So Emma decided to tell Harriet about everything. Harriet cried and was depressed, but she didn't blame Emma.

After some weeks of Mr. Elton's leaving Highbury, some strange news were heard from two persons. At first Mr. Knightley said them, then Miss Bates confirmed. They found that Mr. Elton decided to get married. Emma thought that she has to tell Harriet all the information, before someone else told her. Fortunately, she wasn't shocked very much.

Emma was told that Frank Churchill, a son of Mr. Weston, was arriving on the next day. She insisted on meeting him, because she known a lot of things about him. What is more, they were about the same age. That day Frank was introduced to Emma. They spent some time talking and then they met each other met during the party at the Coles. When the dinner was finished, Emma played the piano and then danced with Frank. They wanted to go together to the ball at the Crown Inn, but they didn't go there. Unfortunately, before the ball Frank had got the letter from his mother and had to return home. She was seriously ill. Emma was sad and wrote in the diary that she probably fell in love with Frank. She still thought of him as the close friend.

After the Frank Churchill's leaving Highbury, Mr. Elton arrived to the village with his new wife. They came to visit Emma's family. Their visit was quite short and Mrs. Elton succeeded to make a bad impression on our heroine. Emma said that Mrs. Elton was awful and arrogant. Her father told her to be kinder and not to say such opinions about people they didn't know.

She knew that they had to organise the dinner for Mr. and Mrs. Elton unless the people thought that she didn't like Mrs. Elton. Every one arrived at the party on time, but Mr. Weston had to travel to London and was absent. He was hoped to join the party as soon as he arrived. He brought great news that Frank was going to come to visit them next month, so they might plan the ball.

This ball started and it turned out that Harriet didn't have the partner. Unfortunately, she sat down alone. When Mrs. Weston saw this, he asked Mr. Elton to go to Harriet and ask her to dance. He refused and became very rude. Mr. Knightley asked her to dance instead. Emma was very grateful for what he did. Harriet thought that Mr. Elton wasn't the ideal and she promised herself to fell out of love with him.

When Harriet was walking along the Richmond Road next day, some gypsies surrounded her and demanded money. Luckily, Frank Churchill appeared and saved her. Then he got her a lift to Hartfield.

Some nights later Emma and her friend were talking to each other and Harriet told her that she would never marry. Emma was quite sure, that she was thinking about Frank, although she didn't mention his name.

Then Mr. Knightley arrived to Hartfield just to say goodbye. He was travelling to London. The next day the letter came that Frank's aunt had already died.

Some days later Mr. Weston called asked Emma to go to Randals with him to visit Mrs. Weston. As soon as they arrived, they were left alone. Then Mr. Weston told Emma that he knew that Frank and Jane have been engaged in secret. The heroine was shocked, but she denied being in love with Frank. Emma decided to tell Harriet about everything. She wanted to tell her, before someone other told her. Unfortunately, it was too late and Harriet had already heard. She didn't seem to be upset. She said that she fell in love with Mr. Knightley, instead of Frank. Emma was confused and knew that she would die if Mr. Knightley married any other girl. And soon when Mr. Knightley came back to Highbury, he told her that he loved her. Then he asked her to give a chance. Emma was so happy that day. She answered that she was also in love with him.

Emma felt guilty and decided to write to Harriet to tell her about their engagement. Some weeks later Mr. Knightley called at Hartfield and announced the information about Harriet. It turned out that she was also engaged with Robert Martin. Emma seemed to be very surprised, but also very happy.
