Genetically modified food is a type of food which has been modified in laboratories. Some of its roots were changed by special substances or genes. Genes can come from other plants or from animals. Genetically modified food (GM) has a high nutrition content and it is an alternative to traditional food. This discipline of science seems to be very helpful for us in the nearest future. Thanks to it we can help the poorest and starving people living in the countries striking with droughts and floods. What is more, the scientists are able to grow almost every kind of plants and vegetables in different climate. In this way people live in non-agricultural areas can be provided with essential food.
GM food is also helpful for people suffering from different kinds of allergies. Scientists can change the internal structure of a vegetable to eliminate genes evoking the allergy. These techniques can be also used to make products more resistant to pests and climate conditions. If scientists involve some genes in fruits and vegetable, they will more resistant to pests and the harvests will be more fertile.
On the other hand, this kind of food has some disadvantages. The genetically modified fruits and vegetables look more attractive and that follows in their prices. Often they are much more expensive. What is more, we can't foresee its influence on our bodies. Unfortunately, we don't know if the consumption of modified food is healthy and if causes some diseases.
We aren't aware the fact that even if we avoid buying generally modified food, the fruits and vegetables which are believed to be healthy are full of pesticides. They are used by framers to make the harvests more resistant to different kind of pests. Moreover, the use of pesticide is very popular and it is increasing. Biotechnological companies try to outdo each other at production of pesticide which make the plants resistant to the greater number of pests. The more pesticide the food contains, the more toxic it can be. These harmful substances contained in the food may cause a lot of diseases. We can't even imagine how threatening could be the consequences of eating that food.
I my opinion, the genetically modified food will be the bless and in the same way a curse. It can solve some nutrition problems, but also it can cause a big ecological tragedy. Modification is the intervention in living organisms. And we should be careful in consuming it.
