The separation of the conjoined twins: Mary and Jodie is a very controversial matter. Opinions are shared between opponents and followers of the separation. Both these groups have plenty of arguments to back their statements up. The problem is so difficult because if the twins remain together they would die in a short time. On the other hand, if they were separated, only one of them would have the chance to stay alive. It is essential to take a proper decision to rescue human life.

The case of Mary and Jodie has arisen a lot of questions due to the fact that only one child has the chance to live. The most important question the experts should ask is what the best for these children is. If Jodie's interest is considered, she has a great chance to live a normal or at least tolerable life. The best solution for Jodie is to undergo the operation, which probably give her a possibility to live a normal life.

According to the experts it is difficult to determine what the welfare for Mary is. Unfortunately, her condition is pity and there isn't any chance to improve it. It is sad to say, but she exists as long as her sister lives. Many of Mary's internal organs such as brain, heart and lungs are practically useless. After the operation she won't be able to exist independently. Actually, she is "designated for death". Living in this condition is for Mary nothing else like the continuation of pain and discomfort. All this reasons opt for the operation.

The other serious problem is the parents fear for looking after their daughter in case she is left disabled. They probably won't be able to cope with Jodie's disability because of the lack of money and the low quality of medical care in their country. In my opinion, the girls' parents have assumed the most pessimistic view. Parents don't have the right to take their children life, even if their living conditions are extremely poor. What is more, there are some institutions which will be able to help in situations like this one.

The next controversial question has appeared when the value of somebody's life above another is considered. Both girls have the right to live and nobody is entitled to estimate whose life is more valuable. This case seems to be so difficult because Jodie keeps Mary alive. Jodie's blood and oxygen enable her sister to live. Mary would die without Jodie whose physical condition is much better. Thanks to the separation doctors can help Jodie to live. Unfortunately, they have to sacrifice Mary. Otherwise if the separation didn't take place both children would die. By sacrificing Mary's life Jodie would be able to enjoy the normal life. It is probably the most serious decision the doctors have to take. There aren't any chances to rescue both these girls. In case the operation takes place at least one of them will live. But on the other hand, the doctors aren't entitled to take Jodie's life. So what is better for these twins? Trying to rescue Mary's life at all costs regardless of her sister's welfare or to let these both children die? In my opinion, the best they can do is to carry out the separation and hope that in this way at least one of these girls will live. If they succeed, Mary will be given the best gift she have ever got-life.
