Crime belongs to the biggest problems of modern society. Crime is as old as the mankind itself. It is closely connected with wrong human deeds. There is something in our nature, which may cause the crime. If crime lies in our nature, what can we do to prevent it?
To solve this problem I have to present what we consider as the crime. In my opinion it is a kind of violation of law. The situation when someone is hurt, because the perpetrator doesn't consider with someone else. Crime is often connected with aggression. But many times something is considered as a crime, but it isn't really harmful. Some opinions or ideas are often thought to be criminal. In medieval ages the Copernicus's ideas were considered as crime.
Everyone is supposed to obey the law and breaking the social rules is considered as the opposition to the social order. Some opposition may lead to the chaos and anarchy. Chaos is the opposition to the order we are used to. Sometimes the order limits us, but we all are supposed to be submissive to the social rules. On the other hand, if there was a chaos, we wouldn't be limited. There would be freedom and everyone would be allowed to do whatever she or he wanted. The other opinion says that law limited our nature and it was created to tame us.
In spite of the fact that we consider the crime as something wrong, some of us think that in some cases crimes may be explained. Our modern world is so cruel and ruthless that unless we commit some little crimes, other people will do us in. It is popularly called "Law of the Jungle".
I think that all these arguments can't explain the crime. Crime is wrong and we can't say that in some cases it can be explained. In spite of the fact that crimes lie in our nature, we should prevent it. We should fight with it. If someone has problems in distinguishing what is right and wrong, she or he should be treated as a criminal. Only animals don't have the sense to choose what is right and wrong. But we are rational people so we should be aware that we have done something wrong. So the law was created to guard the honest and peaceful people before the wrongdoers. Only anarchists or irrational people may insist on abolition of the law.
So if we think that crime is wrong, the other problem appears. What should we do to prevent the crime? We can't destroy the evil which is inside us, because it lies in our nature. The one we can do is to prevent the crime and establish stricter punishments. The more brutal the crime is, the stricter punishment should be. For the most brutal crimes, for example murders, the death penalty or life sentence should be foreseen. I think that it is ridiculous, when dangerous criminal sent to prison is leaving it after several years. If the law and punishments were stricter, the more crimes would be avoided. People would be afraid of doing something wrong, if the consequences of their deeds were stricter punished. Today criminals know that at worse they may be sent to the prison for a couple of years and then set free. The other alternative is that the prisons should be severe. Today the prisoners are allowed to watch TV, go to the gym and take up some sport disciplines. They are treated as if they were in sanatorium.
On the other hand, it is said that everyone should be given second chance. They should have a chance to improve their mistakes. After some years in prison they are new improved men. Instead of the fact that they are supposed to be better men, I am afraid of these people. I think that before the prisoners would be set free, they should spend some years in the strictest prison we can imagine. They must feel that they committed serious crimes and can't get away with it. What is more, the psychological treatment of prisoners is very important. All of them should get through this kind of therapy. In this way some of them change their attitudes and become better men. In my opinion, the prisoners should work very hard and do public works. The costs of providing the state prisons and prisoners are very high, so the prisoners should be helpful in this way. They may pay off their debts to the society. The more controversial proposal says that the prisoners could be guinea pigs for medical treatment and medicines.
According to the newest researches, some of us are more susceptible to become the criminal. It depends not only on our genes, but also on the status, education and environment we grew up. So we may start to carry out some tests. If someone turns out to be the potential criminal, he should be treated in the special way. These people should get through the psychological treatment. If it succeeded, some serious crimes would be prevented.
I think that pupils at school should be taught what is wrong. It also should reduce the crime rate. The pupils should be also punished for their excesses. They should be aware that more serious crimes would be punished stricter. I think that parents should be more careful what their children do and watch. The movies full of brutal scenes should be forbidden for teenagers. These kinds of movies should be marked with the special symbols, which warn the public that they aren't proper for the teenagers. Government should supports the media campaign against the violence and aggressive among the young people. Parents and teachers should guard the morality of young people. I think that crimes should be nipped in the bud. The prevention is better than providing so many prisons and prisoners.
