Drugs have always been a controversial issue. Nowadays, the opinion that they should be legalised is becoming more and more popular. As there are many opponents, the issue evokes a lot of heated discussions. There are countries, like for example the Netherlands, which have already introduced law regulations that allow people to buy and have with them small quantities of drugs which can be bought only in special cafés which have the authorisation of the local authorities. Those who oppose the idea, maintain that if drug possession is legal, the problem of drug addicts will become more serious.
The advocates of the legalisation of drugs claim that it is the only way to solve the problem of the illegal drug market and drug dealers. The governments would be able to control the number of people taking drugs therefore it could be easier to implement new programs aimed at prevention of drug addiction. Moreover, as forbidden fruit is always tempting, drugs became legal probably less people would be tempted into trying them. Another good point is that, legalisation of drugs would help to deal with drug smuggling. Besides, wars between drug gangs would probably stop. Another argument is that prohibition of using drugs is, in fact, a restriction on our freedom, which is one of the basic human rights.
Despite all possible positive consequences of making the selling of drugs legal, the opposition against the idea is very strong. It seems improbable that legalisation of drug use would help to solve the problem of the black market and smuggling. In fact, I think that those problems would become even more acute. Besides, freedom does not mean being allowed to do whatever you want to; freedom means accepting the fact that not everything is allowed. What is more, selling drugs is, in fact, selling death as their harmful influence on our mind and organism is widely known. Therefore, legalisation of drugs is, according to me, immoral. In addition, it does not seem possible to control who would buy narcotics, therefore even children could take them and, in consequence, become addicts.
All things considering, although legalisation of drug market can appear to be a good idea, all advantages of it are, in fact, superficial. The truth is that drugs cause addiction that is the most harmful to our health and the most difficult to deal with. Therefore, I believe that we should prevent drug dealing rather than make it legal.
